Our predictions for Premier League 2015...
With various high-profile transfers already gone through and many more promising signings on the way, this year is shaping up to be even more exciting than last year.
Last year saw Chelsea hold off a late surge by Arsenal, with manager Jose Mourinho winning his second Premier League title in his second stint as Chelsea manager. Rivals Manchester City and Manchester United have since upped their game and made some world-class signings, adding to what is already a formidable squad looking to challenge Chelsea this year.
Here we take a look at some of the biggest new signings and offer our predictions.
Premier League Big-Spenders
Raheem Sterling - Manchester City - €69 million
The young star from Liverpool attracted plenty of controversy this summer with the ongoing saga with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. Fans accused Sterling of holding the club ransom, whereas Sterling has always said he simply wanted to join a club with ambition, i.e., genuine contenders for the title. With the amount of talent at Manchester City, however, will Sterling end up as just another benchwarmer?
ExpressVPN Verdict: MISS
Roberto Firmino - Liverpool - €41 million
The Brazilian signed from Hoffenheim is earmarked to fill the huge gap left by Luis Suarez when he left for Barcelona. Having scored 35 goals in 140 appearances for the Bundasliga outfit, Firmino definitely knows how to find the back of the net. But with Steven Gerrard recently departed from the Anfield club, will Firmino find decent service hard to come by?
ExpressVPN Verdict: HIT
Morgan Schneiderlin - Manchester United - €35 milliion
At age 25, Schneiderlin has his best years ahead of him. Voted Southampton's player of the year, Schneiderlin was instrumental in helping the Saints achieve 7th position in a team that has been generally labeled mediocre. Already used to the pace of the Premier League, Schneiderlin is looking to fill a central midfield role alongside another new United signing: Bastian Schweinsteiger.
ExpressVPN verdict: HIT
Memphis Depay - Manchester United - €27.5 million
At only 21, Depay was an integral part of PSV Eindhovens team last season, contributing 28 goals in 40 games. Depay, however, is considered temperamental, and his attitude when playing in a team where he is not the star will be scrutinised. There is no doubt that Depay has tremendous footballing talent, but his first season will be one of adjustment, to a league where his lightweight frame will count against him.
ExpressVPN verdict: MISS (for now)
Georginio Wijnaldum - Newcastle United - €20 million
Another player from PSV Eindhoven, Wijnaldum has not been as prolific as Depay, and has not shown as much potential. He did, however, score 18 goals last season, which saw PSV win the Dutch Eredivisie under Philip Cocu. How will he adapt to the bitter northern cold? Or to a struggling team both on and off the field? Wijnaldum’s success story has yet to be written.
ExpressVPN verdict: MISS (for now)
Christian Benteke - Liverpool - €46 million
Another player signed to fill the goal void, Benteke was scouted by other top Premier League teams such as Chelsea and Arsenal. A strong forward, Benteke knows the Premier League and his contribution at the end of last season help keep the Villians float above the relegation zone. At 24, Benteke has his entire future ahead of him, and may just be the remedy that Liverpool are looking for.
ExpressVPN verdict: HIT
